What does this mean and why should jewelers care? 

Heat treatment is one of the most influential processes a sapphire goes through, yet it is rarely explained clearly when stones change hands. If you are sourcing sapphires for your work, it helps to understand what heating does, what it doesn’t do, and how to know what you are buying.

What Heat Treatment Actually Does

Heating a sapphire means bringing it to extremely high temperatures, usually between 1,200°C and 1,800°C, inside a controlled environment.

The easiest way to think about it is like firing ceramics in a kiln. The clay already contains everything it needs. The firing does not change what the material is, it simply stabilizes and reveals qualities that were already present. Heat treatment works in a similar way with sapphire.

The goal is visual improvement. Heating can:

  • deepen color saturation by redistributing trace elements like iron and titanium

  • improve clarity by dissolving certain inclusions such as rutile silk that can make a stone look hazy

  • shift color toward cleaner or brighter blues and greens

What heating cannot do is turn a sapphire into something else. The mineral remains natural corundum. The structure of the stone stays the same. What changes is how that structure interacts with light.

Does Heating Affect Value?

Yes, but context matters.

Unheated sapphires of comparable quality are rarer, which is why they usually command higher prices. Their color and clarity has been formed entirely without human intervention. Collectors and many clients value that idea strongly.

That said, unheated does not automatically mean more beautiful. A dull unheated sapphire is still dull, while a well selected heated stone can be exceptional.

The real issue in the trade is not heating itself. Heating is normal and widely accepted. The problem is undisclosed treatment. Any reputable supplier should clearly tell you whether a stone is heated or not. Transparency is what protects both you and your client.

Does Heating Affect Durability?

In most cases, no. However, there are some stones unsuitable for heating. Any stones with problematic cracks or fractures need to be identified before sending in for heating as the heating process can crack the stones along those lines. 

This sorting process is done before we cut the stone, so none of our heated sapphires are at risk for splitting or cracking.

How We Think About Heating at Earthcut Gems

We do not heat stones in-house, and our approach depends entirely on the material.

Our Rock Creek sapphires are heated.

Rock Creek produces large volumes of rough that genuinely benefit from heat. Many stones emerge from the ground grayish, green, or muted. Heating brings out the vivid blues and saturated colors the deposit is known for. In this case, heat is not hiding anything. It is revealing potential already inside the stone.

Our Missouri River sapphires are unheated.

Missouri River material has a different personality. These stones tend toward soft pastels, quiet blues, teals, and lavender grays. Heating would push them toward brightness that does not feel true to their character. We leave them unheated because their subtlety is exactly what makes them special.

When you buy from us, the treatment status is always clear. Rock Creek is disclosed as heated. Missouri River is unheated. We do not blur that line.

  • Has this sapphire been heat treated?

  • What deposit or origin does the material come from?
