What Causes the Color in a Montana Sapphire
All sapphires are made of corundum, or aluminum oxide. In its pure form, corundum is actually colorless. The color we see comes from tiny trace elements that enter the crystal as it forms underground.
In Montana sapphires, iron and titanium are the main players. The balance between those elements determines the final color. When iron and titanium line up in the right proportions, you get blue. Shift that balance slightly and the stone moves into teal, green, yellow, or the soft in-between tones Montana sapphires are known for.
This is why Montana material shows such a wide range of colors. The deposits are formed under changing geological conditions, so the chemistry varies not only between mining areas but even between stones pulled from the same gravel bar.
Every crystal records a slightly different environment.
Why Montana Sapphires Look Different in Different Lighting
There are two main reasons for this: pleochroism and the type of light you are viewing the stone under.
Pleochroism means a crystal absorbs light differently depending on direction. Many Montana sapphires show strong pleochroism, so the color shifts as the stone rotates. A teal sapphire might appear blue from one angle and green from another.
A cutter has to work with this intentionally. The orientation of the stone determines which color faces up once it is set, so cutting is as much about understanding light behavior as it is about shaping the gem.

Lighting itself also plays a role. Warm indoor lighting tends to soften blues and bring forward warmer tones. Daylight or cooler lighting often emphasizes blues and greens. A sapphire that reads as bright teal outdoors may appear more blue gray indoors.
This variability is not a defect. It is simply how natural sapphire interacts with light, and for many designers it is part of what makes Montana material so compelling. The stone changes with its environment rather than looking static.
How Deposit Affects Color
Not all Montana sapphires look alike. Where the stone comes from is one of the best predictors of its color character.
Rock Creek sapphires
Rock Creek material often shows brighter, more saturated blues and blue-greens. Much of the rough benefits from heat treatment, which clarifies and intensifies color. The result is some of the most vivid Montana sapphire available.
Missouri River sapphires
Missouri River material has a different personality. These stones lean softer and more atmospheric in tone. Expect quiet blues, muted teals, lavender grays, and pastel shades. We keep Missouri River sapphires unheated because their subtle color is exactly what makes them special. Heating would push them toward a look that does not feel true to the material.
